Jagdgeschwader 52 history
Note that this unit only operated with the Bf-109 throughout the war and was mostly stationed in the Eastern front, except at the beginning and late stages of the war. Later in 1944, the unit was re-designated 8./JG3 and transferred to the Western front. By convention, pilots associated with this unit will operate the following aircraft models for Dead is Dead events according to the following:
13 Sep 1939 – 27 Oct 1939
Unit was formed on the 13th of September in Böblingen, Germany. Initial operation with Bf-109s (Emil models).
28 Oct 1939 – 9 Jun 1941
Unit operated in several different locations in the Western front (France, Belgium, and Netherlands) with brief periods of rest in between. The unit continued to use the Bf-109 E models (E7 model from August 10th 1940 onwards).
10 Jun 1941 – 28 Jun 1941
Unit transferred to Suwalki in Poland and re-armed with the Bf-109 Friedrich model (Bf-109 F2).
29 Jun 1941 – 28 Jul 1942
Unit deployed in Molodelzno (Minsk) to begin operations in the Eastern front. Operated in several different bases throughout the campaign with the Bf-109 F models (F4 model from June 29th 1941 onwards).
30 Jul 1942 – 14 Aug 1944
Unit remained in the Eastern front and re-armed with the Bf-109 Gustav models (G2 model from July 30th 1942 to March 1st 1943/ G4 model from March 2nd 1943 to March 31st 1943/ G6 model from April 1st 1943 to August 14th 1944).
15 Aug 1944 – 10 Oct 1944
Unit was redesignated 8./JG3 and transferred to Ziegenhain in Germany where it also re-armed with the Bf-109 G14.
11 Oct 1944 – 8 May 1945
Unit operated in several different location in Germany as the 8./JG3 until the end of the war with Bf-109 Gustav and Kurfürst models (mix of G14-G10 and K4s from October 11th 1944 to May 8th 1945)
